Our Story: Built on Trust, Preserved by Care
In 2007, Islamia Pharmacy opened its first counter in Gulshan with a simple, quiet realization: when people need medicine, they are rarely having a normal day. They are worried about an ailing child, managing a parent’s chronic pain, or rushing out in the middle of the night after an unexpected hospital discharge.
At that time, finding genuine, properly stored medicine at odd hours felt like a gamble. Dhaka’s retail pharmacy scene was often fragmented, plagued by rumors of compromised batches, erratic storage conditions during summer power cuts, and counters that pulled their shutters down just when medical emergencies struck.
We set out to build an institution that operated on a completely different standard: a pharmacy where no family ever had to question whether a tablet was authentic, whether a vial of insulin had lost its potency in the heat, or whether help was available past midnight.
Since day one The Uncompromised Standard
From our earliest days, we made decisions that went against common industry shortcuts.
While others sourced through informal supply chains to maximize margins, we closed our doors to unauthorized distributors and gray markets. We established direct, auditable partnerships with licensed pharmaceutical manufacturers. If a manufacturer didn’t deliver it directly, it didn’t enter our inventory.
We also treated the cold chain as an ethical duty, not an afterthought. In Bangladesh, where temperatures soar and neighborhood power fluctuations are routine, temperature-sensitive medications like vaccines, eye drops, and insulins can silently lose their therapeutic power in an ordinary display fridge. We invested early in commercial medical refrigeration with instantaneous generator and UPS backup systems, ensuring that clinical potency remained untouched 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Where we are Growing With Our Communities
We didn’t grow by rushing to open dozens of identical storefronts. We expanded carefully, choosing locations where communities were underserved during critical hours:
- Gulshan-1 & Gulshan-2Growing to four strategic branches across Habib Super Market, Bhabon Market, Rob Super Market, and Zahed Plaza, creating an interlocking care network in one of Dhaka’s busiest hubs.
- Banani & BashundharaBringing dedicated neighborhood pharmacies to Road 11 and Jagannathpur, ensuring growing residential and student areas had immediate access to genuine prescriptions.
- NarsingdiTaking our standard of authentic medicine and strict cold-chain infrastructure beyond Dhaka’s borders to DC Road, Jailkhanar More.
Across all 7 branches, we deliberately kept the feel of a neighborhood apothecary. Our pharmacists don’t simply read barcodes; they know their regular patrons by name, understand their chronic treatment plans, double-check dangerous drug interactions, and explain dosages with patience and care.
Open late Why We Stay Awake
A high fever doesn’t wait for morning. An asthma flare-up doesn’t respect business hours.
Knowing that medical distress strikes without warning, we keep all our branches open seven days a week until 1:30 AM, while our flagship Gulshan-1 branch at Habib Super Market stays operational until 3:00 AM every single night, including Fridays and national holidays.
To bridge the gap between home and pharmacy, we integrated simple, accessible technology. A patient can photograph a prescription and send it directly via WhatsApp to their neighborhood branch. Within minutes, our staff confirms availability, checks batch details, and sets it aside for immediate collection or rapid delivery, sparing families unnecessary travel and stress during emergencies.
What comes next Looking Ahead
Nearly two decades after dispensing our first prescription in Gulshan, Islamia Pharmacy Ltd. remains guided by the same founding compass. As healthcare systems evolve and digital tools advance, the core of our work will never change:
We protect the integrity of the medicine your physician prescribes, treat every customer with human empathy, and ensure that whenever you need care, a light is always on.
